In 1993, the Phoenix Gallery, Lavenham,
curated an exhibition entitled "Spencer Pryse: Three Generations
of Artists", featuring Emma Cameron's work alongside that of
her mother, Tessa
Spencer Pryse R.B.A. (born 1939), and grandfather, Gerald
Spencer Pryse (1882-1956).
Artist Bernard Cheese, R.E., wrote an introduction for the published
catalogue which accompanied the show.
Both Emma's parents are artists, so her early talent for drawing
was recognised and she was able to attend Camberwell and the Central
School, obtaining diplomas and an Honours Degree, between 1981 and
1987.
She has inherited her grandfather's skill in drawing, having a
strong sense of form and tone in the tradition of Augustus John
and Dame Laura Knight.
In painting, she looks back at childhood experience, exploring
aspects of her inner world and investing them with new meaning.
The artist James
Dodds says of her work, "I have never ceased to be amazed
at the apparent ease with which she draws and paints, in particular
the human figure: a natural talent; but underlying this is a genuine
struggle of many years' hard work...This show is not only a wonderful
expression of Emma's belief and persistence as an artist, but also
a culmination of a living tradition shown through the talents and
touch of three generations of artists."
